Is It Advisable To Play Baseball After Injury To Finger?
I fractured my middlefinger/hand on April 11th, my doctor here (home doctor) said four weeks from the date of the injury and I can play baseball again. I have had it splinted up since the 14th, and the pain and swelling has dropped significantly, and I have an important baseball game may 5th. What would be the harm in coming back a few days early if any? And do you think I could play?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi,
Middle finger is important for daily activities involving hand. Using the fractured finger in baseball game within 21 days of immobilization by splint (where it is exposed to all types of movements) along with a forceful jolt to fractured area.
This can lead to refracturing the partially healed middle finger and lead to malformed healing and permanent deformity. Knowing the possibilities, you are to take decision to play or not. No professional would allow to take risk of serious injury to same finger again.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
