Is Intake Of Tegretol Advisable For An Alzheimer S Patient?

My husband has dementia/Alzheimers. The doctor recently put him on Depakote and that didn t help. Then he changed to Tegretol. His condition seems worse to me. Very difficult to get him to do anything. For example: Go to dining room to eat. Doesn t want to sit down and picks up chair. Can t get his pjs on at night. Will not stand up long enough to pull pants down and then sit down to put the others on. He seems more confused and agitated. Is this a good medication for him to be on?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Tegretol (carbamazepine) can be given in Alzheimer patients if neuroleptic medications alone are not helpful.

But as you hardly see any difference, it will be better if your husband is put on Tegretol and Haloperidol.

The combination of carbamazepine and haloperidol seems to be promising in the clinical management of elderly Alzheimer's patients.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
