Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
hello, I am 49, weigh 80kg and am 157cm tall. I have quit smoking about a month ago. I have started a gym program and found out I have high bp for which I am now medicated. I have been running for 1 minute and walking for 1min. My heart rate elevates to 165 or higher sometimes when running. Is this dangerous ? I get quite concerned when it's happening. Should I back off from running ?
Regarding your concern, you should know that it is quite normal to have high heart rate and blood pressure values during physical activity or anxiety. It is caused by the activation of the sympathetic nervous system, leading to increased levels for adrenaline. This is a normal physiological reaction, which does not harm you.
Anyway, I would recommend you to closely monitor your blood pressure values in the next days, frequently during the day, in sitting position after 10 minutes of total relax. If your blood pressure values are high even during resting, starting anti-hypertensive therapy may be needed.
Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
