Is Gallbladder Removal Necessary For The Treatment Of Gallstones?

Hi Doctor, I am a 40 yr old male, diagnosed with a 8.7 mm gallbladder polyp/stone after I had some pain in the back and below ribs on right side of the body. Ultrasound showed that gallbladder walls were smooth and normal but with one polyp. However none of the doctors did any other testing including HIDA scan and they are all insisting on me removing my gallbladder asap. When I asked how urgent is this, I was told that things can get worse anytime although there is one polyp and some sludge only in the gallbladder which is visible. I have had no pain since the gb attack on december 22nd. I do have mild discomfort on days when i dont walk around a lot and work from home. Also my weight is on 135 lbs so I am not overweight either.

Hi,

Gallstones are hardened deposits of digestive fluid that can form in your gallbladder. Generally, gallstones do not cause any signs or symptoms. If a gallstone lodges in a duct and causes a blockage, then it results in signs and symptoms. Most cases with gallstones require surgery to take out the gallbladder.

In your case, it would be advisable to get gallbladder removed as you have a gallstone and it is associated with a polyp.

You may have mild symptoms as of now, but you can land up in sudden and rapidly intensifying pain in the upper right portion of your abdomen if the stone blocks the duct.

Kindly follow the advice of your doctor and get it operated as suggested.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ashakiran S,
