Is Continuation Of Pregnancy Advisable When Diagnosed With Isolated Severe Ventriculomegaly?

Hi I was informed that my baby has excess fluid on the brain of 14mm at 20 weeks, amnio and MRI came back fine but the fluid increased at week 22 to 18mm. We now do not know if we should terminate or continue with the pregnancy - it s has been diagnosed as isolated severe ventriculomegaly. Any advice would be great. Thank you Nikki

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Many babies with isolated ventriculomegaly will survive and can have normal development. A minority may die after birth or can have developmental delay. It is difficult to predict prognosis before delivery. Some babies might need surgical intervention after deliver to relieve pressure inside skull.

Decision on termination in such cases depend on parental wish after a group discussion among parents, pediatrician and obstetrician. Your doctor will guide through this

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
