Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Colonoscopy is a safe procedure and complications are very minimal. He has to be on a soft liquid diet on the day before procedure and should take laxative on the day of the procedure. In case of any previous cardiac illness he might require a clearance from a cardiologist. Colonoscopy is important to detect early colon cancers which is very important in your case as he is having a family history of colon cancer.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
