Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
hi I have been suffering from dizzy spells which have caused me to fall or become very dizzy when I get up from a seated position for many years. this can happen multiple times in a day. I either have to stay very still or move very slowly in order to stop myself from falling down. I was recently diagnosed with anemia during a pregnancy blood work screening. could this be related to these frequent spells?
Yes, one of the most common presentations of patients with anemia is with dizziness or lethargy. This problem is especially widespread in females.
But the level of anemia is very dependent because mild anemia should not be causing such persistent and strong bouts of dizziness. If the levels are above 10 then other causes have to be checked like ear or balance related issues. If the levels are below 9 then it is likely the cause of your complaints.
I would like to mention here that anemia needs quick management in pregnancy as this could potentially put the child and the mother at risk. Your doctor might give you an iron replacement or blood transfusion depending on the level of hemoglobin on blood tests and examination findings such as increased heart rate, shortness of breath etc.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Talal Hussain, General & Family Physician
