Is An Intermittent Pulse Rate Of 54 Ok?

Brother in law has a pulse rate of 54, pres. is 148/82. 65 years old. Did pass out and go to the hospital yesterday. He is in a home. They just called. He will be seeing a heart dr. Next week. Is 54 ok until then. The low pulse comes and goes. Mike johnson

Hello Mike! Thank you for asking on HCM! Regarding your concern 54 bpm is a bradycardic rate, and if it is a steady sinus rhythm, then there is nothing to worry. But, as we don't know if a lower heart rate may occur, or even worse a cardiac conductance disorder may periodically appear and be responsible for those passing out episodes, you should be very careful. An ambulatory 24 to 48 hours ECG monitoring would be very helpful to clarify that issue (whether heart conductance problems are responsible for the symptomatology, or an alternative explanation exists).
If a deterioration of the clinical status appears, you should immediately present to ER.
