Is An Increased Potassium Level A Cause For Concern?

My Rheumatologist just called and told me my Potassium levels are high (blood draw this past Friday). He wants me to limit sodium and Potassium rich foods and get a new draw at a different location this Friday. What could be causing this and should I worry?

Hello,

Eating foods with much potassium can elevate the potassium levels. Don't eat much of these foods:
*bananas, cantaloupe, grapefruit dried fruits, prune, raisins
*cooked spinach
*cooked broccoli
*potatoes
*cucumber
*peas.

Hope I have answered the question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hi,

High potassium has many causes but in an otherwise healthy person, a single reading always needs confirmation by another reading because of sampling or little delay in the process may show high blood potassium.

If it is confirmed to be there after second reading then we need to know the cause. Certain drugs, kidney problems may be causing it and a long list of causes. But most of the times it is sampling error in a healthy person.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
