Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is Alcohol Consumption Safe While Suffering From Gout?
I have just recently developed gout, I had my first flare up a week ago. I was given a steroid shot and steroid pack that i have just recently finished. I also used 3 colchicine on the first day of treatment. My flare up has settled down nicely and I have been adhering to the recommended diet to include avoiding alcohol. I am a devout beer drinker and home brewer, so my question to you is whether there is anyway to be able to drink beer again? Are there any dietary measures to take prior to having a beer or two to avoid an attack? Is there medications that control uric acid levels that allow a gout sufferer to partake in any of the food or drinks that can cause a gout attack?
Yes Gout is related to alcohol consumption because of high production uric acid which crystallizes to form gout granules in the joint especially the small joints. This is catalyzed by use of red meat which in most cases is accompanied by bear drinking. As to whether you can use diet. Yes, this is the use of vegetables, fruits and drink alot of water.
Yes there are drugs which can be used to control gout but you have to reduce the causative factor which is taking alcohol. Going back to the bear you need to reduce as you monitor the gout attacks and consult your doctor.
