Is Accidental Ingestion Of A Karvol Plus Capsule By A Toddler A Serious Concern?

Hi my 1 and half year old baby accidentally swallowed one karvol plus capsule. Is it dangerous?.i immediately admitted him in hospital. They inserted tube on his nose to remove the medicine and now he is under observation for 8 hours. They said if medicine is released from the capsule it will injure intestine. Pls help

Hi,

Karvol plus capsule, is used for treating the symptoms of nasal congestion. As, in your case, nasal tube has already been inserted to remove the medicines. Definitely, its ingredients- camphor, menthol, eucalyptol and terpineol are irritant to the intestine, still, amount in one capsule does not seem to be able to cause a very serious damage or fatal outcome.

Still, more prognosis, will depend on the time elapsed between capsule intake & insertion of nasal tube. If the time elapsed is less, then most of the ingredients will be removed from the stomach before reaching to intestine and giving a favorable outcome. However, delay in insertion of nasal tube may give symptoms of intestinal irritation and hence a delay in recovery. Generally, an observation period of 12-24 hours seem reasonable in this case.
