Is Accidental Ingestion Of Lidocaine Gel A Cause Of Concern?
Hi I have the flu and went to take my cough medicine but didn t turn on the light. I took the wrong medicine. It was Lidocaine Gel 2% Jelly. I knew as soon as I swollowed it was not cough medicine. I didn t get much down. I have garlled and rinsed my mouth out but it says on the bottle For External Use Only Am I in danger? Thanks for your help
It may cause certain side effects which depend upon the amount ingested. Accidental ingestion of lidocaine gel can cause numbness of the mouth and throat, which can lead to trouble swallowing and even choking. If a substantial amount is ingested, enough can be absorbed into the bloodstream to affect vital organs, primarily the brain and heart causing mild drowsiness and headache to confusion, ringing in your ears, tremors, seizures, coma, and cardiac arrest. So, in view of the above, I advise you to visit the hospital immediately for further evaluation.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
