Is A Peeled Mole On Skin Post Exposure To Sun A Cause For Concern?

Hi there, i recently went on vacation in peuto rico and was snorkling , applied sunscreen of couse but got pretty sun burned anyways ... As my skin peeled a mole that was not too big but darker beown peeled off, probably due to scratching and trauma of the sun burn. Its been about 2 weeks and i see the mole looks like its starting to rejuvenate but its a lot lighter in color . Went for skin check and asked dr about it . She advised me to wait a couple of weeks more as a sun burn will sometimes show up looking like a melanoma or false reading , do you know this to be true? and seeing that it was documented as being a quote normal mole about 18 months ago, would you think this is good advice or should mole be biopsied now as opposed to waiting a couple of weeks? Im kinda worried about it .fthank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I recommend you to get the mole biopsy after detailed physical examination from a a dermatologist or your GP. There are certain physical changes observed in a potentially malignant mole, for instance change in shape, size and color of the mole. If needed biopsy can be done. However, since your GP recommended to wait for a while to get reexamined, I would suggest you the same. I understand your concern, but it is logical to wait for a few weeks before getting the mole biopsy.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ayesha Shareef, General & Family Physician
