Is A Bronchoscopy Essential For A Patient With Severe Asthma?

I have severe asthma. My doctor wants me to undergo a bronchioscopy. Do I need this if my CT scan of my lungs showed something, or if nothing showed up. This doctor office is out of town and difficult for me to get to. The doctor is difficult to reach during the day due to NY work schedule. Have used all my sick leave, and my pay will get docked if I don t work. If I get fired I lose my insurance. Please advise on necessity of this procedure. Thanks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Using a bronchoscope to visually examine the airways and collect fluid and tissue can help guide effective therapy for difficult-to-treat asthma patients.

While standard anti-inflammatory treatment with inhaled corticosteroids helps many asthma patients, there is a significant number of patients who need a more personalized diagnosis and treatment and bronchoscopy provide important clinical information that can help us better treat even the most difficult asthma patients.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Prabhash Verma,
