Is A Bladder Catheter Necessary During An Inguinal Hernia Repair Procedure?

I recently underwent an inguinal hernia repair and later had some minor compliactions from the bladder catheter that the surgeon ordered after was was put under. I later researched the issue and found that for healthy patients who were able to self void beforehand and with surgeries lasting under three hours, there is NO medical reason to expose the patient to the many serious risks of Foley indwelling bladder catheterization. The surgeon was very evasive of my inquiry. What possible reason could she have had to order this cath? Jim
