Is Tinzaparin Intake Safe For An Elderly Woman?

Elderly lady 88 broke thigh bone given Tinzaparin for 2 weeks - read that Canadian trial had to stop re so many people died and through this study the limit which used to be not to be used for over 90 reduced to not to be used over 70. Lady had to have blood transfusion in hospital this is 2 weeks after the operation where they said not much blood was lost. I read that Tinzaparin can be held in the tissues of elderly. Symptoms now are dark urine with some bits in - fowl chemical smell and tiredness falling asleep, This lady had poor kidney function and anaemia and also broke an arm 3 months before and given blood thinners then. Also read that giving Tinzaparin on top of it being given before can increase chance of bleeds, clots, anaemia etc How to get urine tested in UK to see if Tinzaparin still coming out or what damage it is doing now? What to do?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Tinzaparin should be avoided in elderly people and at the same time with chronic kidney diseases, because it is accumulated in body and so it increases very very much the risks for hemorrhage as a blood thinner and it may causes blood in urine, brain hemorrhage, blood from digestive system detectable or occult, hematoma in skin etc. You should check the complete blood count (usually look carefully level of Hb, Rbc and PLT), urine may look dark, red or slightly red or may have red blood cells in urine samples seen in microscop at the lab.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
