Is TSH Level Of 3.98 A Cause For Concern?

HI Dr. I am 4 weeks pregnant . MY TSH level was 3.98 . My Iron studies also showed ferritin 14 (Low). My doctor prescribed tyroxine and also Iron supplement. I know it is good to use both at the same time .My question is ..... Is it better not to use Iron supplement for a while ? or just tyroxine in the morning and Iron at night is safe enough ?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Normal thyroid hormone level maintenance is very much essential for survival of fetus during pregnancy. Since your thyroid hormones are deranged, you need to take the medication as advised.
Similarly, iron is essential for normal growth and development of the fetus. Since your iron levels are low, you need to supplement it regularly. Hence, kindly take the iron supplementation as advised.
Your condition can be assessed during follow-up and then the medications can be altered accordingly.
Kindly don't alter them at this stage as it is very essential.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
