Is Synthroid 50 Mcg The Right Medicine For Heart Palpitations?

I am a 76 yr old female status/post total thyroidectomy in 1999 - I have a history of irregular heart beats and palpitations in my Synthoid dosage is too high - Now on a lower dose of Synthroid per Cardiologist advice not to take anything higher than 88 mcg daily - However, on that dose I feel like a dish rag and can hardly function and my TSH level is too hight - I am now trying a dosage of Synthroid 50 mcg in the morning , then 50 mcg four to six hours later to avoid Synthroid stressing my heart - My question is ---- could I take a dose of Synthroid 50 mcg at bedtime, then 50 mcg the following morning at 6: 00 - I would be getting a total of 100 mcg/ daily, but it would not zap my heart b/c I would be taking it in a split dosage -

Dr. Hanif warmly welcomes you!

Thanks for consulting at my virtual clinic. I have carefully worked through your case, and can well realize your health worries. Being your physician, I want to assure, I will take care all of your medical concerns.

I preferably suggest you to take half (25 mcg) at bedtime and 50mcg in the morning to make a total of 75 mcg. This will also help your TSH to get lowered down. It would have been very helpful if you had added TSH levels and exact dosage which you were taking before your cardiologist asked you to lower the dose.

I refer you back to your cardiologist (or you may consult me back as a follow-up) after 4 weeks of taking 75 mcg Synthroid. I will then be in a better position to guide you how to proceed. I may like to add some other medication too for heart palpitations.

Hope I answered all of your questions. In future, if you need further, detailed and quick assistance on any health issue, feel free to ask me a question by writing my name as a reference in the start of your question. I will get back to you right away. Have a wonderful time ahead.

Regards!
