Is Prednisone The Right Medicine For Severe Cough?

My daughter has a bad cough the doctor prescribe DM maximum liquid and prednisone 20 mg today. She is still coughing and needs relief. What else can she do? She has tried plenty of water and cough drops along with the medication but cant sleep from all the coughing.
