Is Prednisone Advisable Instead Of Celebrex For Osteoarthritis?

I suffer from Chrohn s disease and osteoarthritis. For the last 2 years, I ve been taking Celebrex to control the arthritis. My pharmacist has suggested that I should consider replacing Celebrex with a low dosage of prednisone. Any concerns with this approach?

Hi,

Celebrex is a painkiller which belongs to a group called Non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs. Prednisone is a steroid which is also a powerful anti inflammatory drug. Since you have osteoarthritis and Crohn's disease, steroids can be prescribed. As your pharmacist has advised, when using steroids, start with a low dose and gradually increase if required. Similarly on stopping the drug, gradual reduction of the drug is essential. There are certain conditions in which the drug must be cautiously used which may include diabetes, hypertension, peptic ulcer, acute infections. Kindly consult with your physician regarding the same.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
