Is Metoprolol Advisable While Suffering With Glaucoma?

I have been taking Metoprolol ER Succinate 50 MG daily for several years for my fast heartbeat. I was just diagnosed with the early stages of glaucoma today. I have to go back to my doctor in a week for another work-up. Should I be taking the Metoprolol with having the glaucoma? I also take Meloxicam for arthritis and raloxifene for bone density. Are they a problem with glaucoma? Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.
It should not be taken at the same time.
The glaucoma is effective treated by medications like Timolol eye drops (a beta blocker), Azetazolamide in the form of tablet or Brinzolamide in the form of eye drops depending upon the type of glaucoma.
Since you have been taking tablet Metoprolol for the prevention of fast heart beats and if you take Timolol eye drops, the effect of using both at the same time might result in lower blood pressure or slower heart rate, hence they should not be used at the same time or other medications such Acetazolamide or Brinzolamide can be taken along with Metoprolol which do not cause fall in BP or slowing of the heart rate if taken together.
The prescribed medications Meloxicam and Raloxifene for arthritis & osteoporosis can be taken along with the medications for glaucoma, they do not cause any harmful interactions with those medications.
Hope this helps.
