I read your question and your concern is completely justified.
I must say I am not entirely sure what he has prescribed you, because first you say Zotran but then Zofran with a "f" instead of "t". Zotran is Alprazolam which is a
benzodiazepine used to treat
anxiety, while Zofran is
Ondansetron used to prevent
vomiting. If the first one at least it's for a similar diagnosis (though I disagree with its use), but if it's the second one that doesn't make any sense at all as a substitute for
Limbitrol, there must certainly be an error there.
However I must say that I side with you no matter which of those two, neither is a proper substitute for Limbitrol DS.
Limbitrol DS contains two drugs inside: amitriptilyne and
chlordiazepoxide. The first is an antidepressant and antianxiety drug, the second a benzodiazepine used for anxiety.
I can concur with the statement that some side effects of those drugs might be more dangerous after 65, however I would use that judgement for those who started treatment only now, in which case I would start with another drug with fewer side effects. In your case since you have been taking it for over 30 years with good efficacy and no side effects I really don't see the point of making this switch.
Even if I as a doctor was forced to interrupt it due to certain regulations being imposed on me by healthcare authorities, still I wouldn't use the drug it seems to have been prescribed to you, the appropriate treatment would be an antidepressant alternative with fewer side effects, like drugs belonging to SSRI group of antidepressants (
citalopram, escitalopram to name a few).
So you should insist with the authorities for the continuation of Limbitrol DS, or if not possible at least a valid alternative.
I am sure things will work out for the best.
