Hello,

For your information, respiratory complications like cough, phlegm (mucous) retention, difficulty in breathing is commonly seen in Parkinson's. The reason behind is the weakness of the muscles of the respiratory tract. These patient has also difficulty in swallowing due to the same weakness of the muscles of esophagus.

The mainstay of treatment would be adherence to the anti-Parkinson medication like levodopa which will decrease the effect of disease on the body and hence much of the symptoms will be improved. Also some medication for symptomatic relief should be used along with levodopa.

As iophen is prescribed for your dad, which is commonly used for cough and also decrease mucus production. So I will recommend you to continue the same medicine for your dad's cough. However, difficulty swallowing needs further evaluation by a specialist which can be treated by medications as well as exercises.

Treatment options could include optimization of antiparkinsonian medications, dietary modifications and strategies for nutritional management, postures, swallowing maneuvers, swallowing exercises, neuromodulation, and medical treatments. That is why i would suggest a clinical assessment of your dad's swallowing and treatment options by a specialist doctor.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
