Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am breastfeeding my daughter and work in healthcare. A few days ago I got a pts blood on my fingernails/cuticles. Pt was hiv neg 2 years ago but unknown current. I stopped breastfeeding because I was scared of transmission to mu daughter. Was it right to quit? Can I pump my milk and store it until I get lab work back in a few months?
Hello there, If the unknown status patient's blood just fell on your fingertips then there is no risk of transmission. Unless it has entered the body through a puncture wound or the mucous membrane you need not worry. Yes HIV is transmittable through breast feeding but in your case I do not think there is any chance of transmission. You can continue feeding your daughter. Do not deny her the benefits of your breastmilk.
Hope this helps, I will be glad to address any further queries if you have them,
