Is HIV Transmission Possible Through Breast Milk?

I am breastfeeding my daughter and work in healthcare. A few days ago I got a pts blood on my fingernails/cuticles. Pt was hiv neg 2 years ago but unknown current. I stopped breastfeeding because I was scared of transmission to mu daughter. Was it right to quit? Can I pump my milk and store it until I get lab work back in a few months?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello there,
If the unknown status patient's blood just fell on your fingertips then there is no risk of transmission. Unless it has entered the body through a puncture wound or the mucous membrane you need not worry. Yes HIV is transmittable through breast feeding but in your case I do not think there is any chance of transmission.
You can continue feeding your daughter. Do not deny her the benefits of your breastmilk.

Hope this helps,
I will be glad to address any further queries if you have them,

I find this answer helpful
