Is Gabapentin An Effective Alternative To Seroquel?

Hello, My elderly mom who has Dimentia, was prescribed Seraquel, for sleep, and for the first week it seemed to work well, but the second week we noticed my mom seemed really out of it and disoriented, so we stopped using it. Is there another medicine that will help her sleep without the strong after effects? I ve heard Gabapentin? Is this a good alternative? We ve tried many over the counter sleep aids (including Luna) but they don t seem to work anymore. Thank you Noel Collins

Hello Noel!

Welcome on Healthcaremagic!

You should know that Gabapentine is an antiepilepsy drug, which is not the best treatment choice for sleep disorders.
In this regard, I would recommend starting trazodone or mirtazapine.
You should discuss with her doctor about these treatment options.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!
Best wishes, Dr. Aida
