Is Entamoeba Histolytica Cyst In Stool Of A 1 Year Old A Cause For Concern?

My grandson, 1 1/2-year-old, had high fever of 103 degree with non-stop diarrhea & vomiting, fever subsided on the 2nd day after giving medication, vomiting & diarrhea lasted for another day, stool test result showed cyst of E.H. On the 3rd day, that is today, diarrhea & vomiting also stopped. Taken to a pediatrician on the 2nd day and given antibiotics for 5 days. Is E.H cyst in stool dangerous? What is the cause for it and what is the correct treatment?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Amebiasis is a parasitic infection of the intestines caused by Entameba histolytica (E. histolytica).

It exists in two forms trophozoite and cyst. Trophozoites multiply and are actual responsible for diarrhea.

Whereas cysts usually do not cause diarrhea but they become a source of infection to others which occurs by ingestion of contaminated water, food, water or hands.

To kill the cysts Diloxanide furoate is usually given along with metronidazole (which is effective against trophozoites only).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
