Is Boniva The Right Substitute For Fosamax?

Yes, I have been taking Fosamax for at least 2 yrs now, and I just went to the dentist were she found my wisdom teeth have been coming in side ways and affecting my molers. But she said I was going to have problems with my jaw due to the Fosamax side effect. To stop taking it and for my doctor to give me something else. Now my doctor is going to give me Boniva is that just as good or better? I m kinda confused on what to do?

Hi,

Based on the history you seem to have developed osteonecrosis of the jaw apparently caused by Fosamax. Boniva which is taken monthly has proven to be as effective as Fosamax in the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis with less side effects involving the jaw.

The recommended dose of BONIVA Injection for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis is 3 mg every 3 months administered intravenously over a period of 15 to 30 seconds. Do not administer more frequently than once every 3 months

Perform dental clinical evaluation and panoramic jaw radiograph
– Remove abscesses and other high risk infection sites
– Avoid tooth extraction and dental implants
– Prefer conservative therapy (eg. endodontic therapy)
– Check removable dentures
– Maximize good oral hygiene
– Show to patients the signs, symptoms, and clinical feactures of ONJ
– Provide regulary scheduled hard and soft oral tissue assessments
– Develop a close collaboration between patient, oncologist, dentist and oral surgeon
– Perform oral evaluation
– Collect a history for risk factors
– Encourage good oral hygiene
– Provide regular dental care, to avoid infections
– Prefer conservative therapy
– Discourage implants
– Offer an alternative theraphy in osteoporosis, or “drug holidays”

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
