Is Alendronate Sodium Effective In The Treatment Of Osteoporosis?

I have been diagnosted with osteoperosis and have taken my first pill of Alendronate Sodium. I have heard that taking this pill can cause problems if you fall. By taking this pill you are more likely to have your bone shatter rather than just break which can make the problem much worse. Is this true?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Alendronate drug is a treatment of choice for Osteoporosis as it is very effective in treating osteoporosis. However, necrosis (shattering) of the jaw bone has been very rarely reported with intravenous use, but that is extremely rare.

If you have osteoporosis, then I would advise continuing taking the drug. The only major problem with these drugs is stomach problems that can cause severe irritation of the food pipe. This can also be avoided somehow by taking the pill with a lot of water and an empty stomach and keeping an upright position for 45 minutes after taking the pill that is not lying down.

One more important point is that your calcium should be normal, and you should use a calcium supplement with these drugs. There are a lot of other drugs that can be used for osteoporosis, but their turn only comes if someone cannot tolerate Alendronate drug for any reason.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman
