General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi
Welcome to HCM.
I appreciate your concern for your son's health problem.

Since he has been taking Epival, in addition to increased appetite and weight gain, hair loss or discoloration its use is also associated with liver toxicity which is reflected in the form of raised ALT and GGT levels.

Indeed his fits are controlled with twice daily doses of Epival, but continued liver damage could be fatal for him.

So, in view of the harmful liver toxic effects of Epival, he should be re-evaluated by his treating physician/neurologist for an effective alternate drug like Carbamazepine or Phenytoin which are less like to cause liver damage.

Hope the suggestion given above could be beneficial for him.

Best regards.
