I'm a 24 year old healthy female. I have low blood pressure, exercise regularly, and eat a healthy diet but I have a history of migraines with aura. I am currently struggling with irregular and very heavy menstrual periods ever since getting my Mirena IUD removed about 6 months ago. I had the IUD for a year and a half and ultimately got it removed due to irregularity and other bothersome side effects. Before that I was on Sprintec for a few years, with which I had regular and manageable periods. My intention after having the IUD removed was to use temperature and cervical mucus charting for birth control. However, my cycle has been so irregular that I do not feel comfortable relying on this method for pregnancy avoidance and I also am struggling to deal with the irregular and unpleasant periods. So I went to Planned Parenthood with the intention of obtaining a prescription for oral contraceptives. However, they will not prescribe me combination pills due to my history of migraines, since there is research showing an increased risk of ischemic stroke. They gave me the progestin only pill but these are known to cause irregular bleeding which is the very problem I'd like to solve. Now I feel at a loss for what to do. Is it worth it to see another provider and try to get the combination pills (while taking on the additional risk of stroke)? It seems there is no perfect solution for my situation so I am seeking additional advice. Thank you.
