Must I Discontinue Taking Prilosec For Chronic Heartburn When I Experience Persistent Diarrhea?

I have been having heartburn for about 2 years and would relieve it with Prilosec which worked but I was using it sporadically. My m.d. is telling me to take it every day as directed which I have. I’ve had diarrhea one time that was mostly water. I feel fine but I do have what I call urgency several times a week in the a.m. and the stools are mushy and not fully formed. On the Prilosec box it says to discontinue if you have diarrhea. Is urgency a problem if you feel well and in leaving the bathroom feel good.

Hi,

I would advise you to consult with your doctor on changing to a different medication for heart burn. There are several very good alternatives which may not cause diarrhea, so there is no reason for you to battle with this on and on.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Maria Riechel-Sarup, General & Family Physician
