What Am I Supposed To Do About A Large Hiatal Hernia Without Having A Gastric Bypass While Extremely Obese?

I have a large hiatal hernia. I am extremely obese with a bmi of 50. The surgeon said I need to have gastric bypass done as well as hernia repair. My insurance won t approve gastric bypass because I don t have diabetes or need joint replacement of my hips, knees, or ankles. The surgeon won t fix the hernia without having gastric bypass what am I supposed to do?

Hi,

It is common for insurance companies to have specific criteria that need to be met before they will cover weight loss surgeries such as gastric bypass. However, if your surgeon believes that both procedures are necessary for your health, you may want to consider appealing the insurance decision or exploring other insurance options that might cover the procedure.

In the meantime, it may be helpful to focus on other lifestyle changes that can improve your health, such as eating a healthy diet and engaging in regular exercise within your physical capabilities. These changes may not be as drastic as surgery, but they can still have a significant impact on your health and well-being. It's important to work closely with your healthcare team to determine the best course of action for your specific situation. They may have additional insights or options to consider.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
