I am scheduled to have surgery next week on a horizontal lateral meniscus tear. Up until one month ago, it has been relatively asymptomatic, but since that time has shown acute symptoms of swelling, tightness, numbness in calf and foot, inability to straighten knee and occasional buckling. A cortisone shot two weeks ago produced no noticeable relief. Since Monday, however, some of the symptoms seem to have lessened, and pain around the joint line has lessened. My other knee will require a knee replacement within the next few years. Should I go ahead with this surgery, knowing that it is likely a set-up for arthritis?
