How To Withdraw From Topiramate?

Is is necessary to wean off of Topiramate? If so, how long does it take to wean off 200 mg. (I have been on it for about 7 years for bipolar disorder - I do have an appt. with my doctor on Monday to discuss this, but I am curious and am thinking through my options before I go to this appt.)

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I'm sorry to hear that you couldn't schedule your appointment with your Doctor.

Things to note before weaning off Topiramate:
1) Topiramate withdrawal should be done very cautiously as it can lead to many unwanted adverse effects.
2) The drug should be tapered down based on the duration, symptoms and your body weight.
3) A perfect alternative should be selected for you by your Doctor.

Keep these in mind and speak to your doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Moses John Wesley,
General & Family Physician
