Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband has been on Naminda since May 2016. He has developed personality changes: Quietness, sleeping in the daytime, lack of interest in usual activities (fishing), and feelings of loneliness and anxiety when I am not with him. Are these usual side effects of the drug. What would happen if he quit taking the drug? Does he need to take smaller and smaller doses to wean off the drug?
Namenda carries the same risks as most other psychotropics in that a physical dependence can develop during use. Someone can experience mild, moderate, or even serious withdrawal symptoms if Namenda is stopped abruptly.
Stopping more gradually will not necessarily prevent a withdrawal syndrome from happening, but slow and cautious reductions may potentially reduce the likelihood of more problematic withdrawal reactions.
Talk to your doctor regarding slow reduction of the drug and there should be a regular follow up to avoid unwanted symptoms.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
