How To Treat Ulcer On The Side Of Lower Lip Frenulum?

I seem to have a small ulcer on the right side of my lower lip frenulum. It has been there for a week. I have been rinsing with salt water 3-4x every day. It does not seem to be getting any smaller. It seems as though it is starting to extend upwards and possibly over to the other side of the frenulum. Is there something else I could do? Should I go see my doctor?

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain a small ulcer in the frenulum of the tongue can be a canker sore or apthous ulcer..
The canker sore can take from a week to 15 days to heal..

It can also be a traumatic ulcer caused by any injury inflicted to the frenulum by any hard and sharp food item or anything else..
It leads to formation of a small ulcer due to inflammation and can take from 8 to 10 days to heal..

It can also be due to viral infection (herpes) causing cold sores..

Treatment of the ulcer depends upon the cause..

Apthous ulcers can mostly heal by themselves without any treatment.
Although antimicrobial mouth rinses and saline gargles can help..

In case if the ulcers increase steroid based ointments can be applied..
Avoid spicy, hard and sour foods..

In case of traumatic ulcer it will heal slowly by itself and only in case of pain or increase in size steroid based ointments can be helpful.. Avoid further trauma to the area..

In case of herpes antiviral treatment oral and topical like acyclovir and avoiding contact with infected person can help..

In case of pain in any of the above conditions OTC medicine like Ibuprofen can be taken..

Hope your query is solved

Thanks and regards..
