How To Treat Swelling Of Cheek And Irritation Of Gums After Using Nightguard?

I received a nightguard from my dentist, 9 days ago (it was custom made)for TMJ. The first few days were fine. Wednesday I felt some irritation in the gums, akin to the irritation felt when wearing braces, and they are tightened. I had an appointment for an adjustment on Thursday, and mentioned that pain and was told it was common, and that it should go away after that adjustment.Friday, it was still there, but not as much, so I carried on. Today, Saturday, I woke up and my cheek (same side) is a bit swollen and tender. The swelling starts just above my nostril (right next to my nose) and extends down to the corner of my mouth. It's not severe, and is not visible to anyone else. But I can feel it, and I can see it if I do a close comparison to the other side.Of course, my dentist is closed today, and I'm not sure this is worthy of calling the emergency line. But, is this normal, and what can I do to fix it? I will be calling the office first thing Monday morning, but wanted some ideas before that. Thank you very much!

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain gum irritation after wearing mouth guards commonly occur when there are sharp, irregular and pointed areas on the tissue surface of the mouthguards and as the sharp surface comes in contact with the soft tissues the mucosa gets injured and inflamed leading to irritation and pain..
If it is left untreated the inflammation can also lead to slight swelling in the area..
I would suggest you to consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigation if the mouthguard as well as the teeth and gums in swollen area can help in deciding the course of treatment..
The sharp areas needs to be trimmed and smoothed..
As of now you should avoid wearing the night guard and also apply numbing gel over the irritated gums and also take anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen..
You can do cool compresses over the swelling and sore areas..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
