Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my mother-in-law is 88 years old and has had a stroke and 2-3 TIAs but there was no damage. She recently had a UTI and has been hopitalized on and off for the past several weeks. Recently, we've noticed a personality change. She doesn't initiate conversation and only answers when spoken to in one or two word responses.
Hello and thanks for your question. The personality changes could be from some damage the brain that occurred during the stroke or TIAs. Sometimes these changes do not show up for a while. It could also be that the speech centers in the brain were damaged and she is not understanding speech or is not able to form speech properly. It would be good for her to be closely evaluated by a neurologist to figure out exactly what is going on. Try to get her an appointment with the neurologist and be patient with her in the mean time. I hope that she is doing better soon.
