How To Treat Severe Pain In Shoulder Caused Due To A Massive Tear Of Ligament?

My husband has a massive torn ligament in his shoulder. He was having a lot of pain and limited movement. An xray and MRI showed that it was, as the doctor called it, a massive tear. We were not shown the exray or the MRI. Now two weeks after being diagnosed his shoulder pain and restricted movememt has improved so much he doeen t feel he needs surgery. Can a torn ligament get better on its own?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi.

Only if conservative measures not helpful or are ineffective do we suggest surgery. But this does not mean he will make a complete recovery, he could at some point in time with even mild physical activities hurt the region and feel the same amount of pain and swelling all over again.

Best wishes.
