How To Treat Severe Cough Inspite Of Taking Steroids And Cefdinir For Bronchitis?

Hi I am a 59 old woman that is a non-smoker ,,,, I have been a runner for more than 30 years so this ailment is killing me ,,,,,hopefully you can give me some insight into what is going on with me,,,, I came down with laryngitis about 2 and a half weeks ago. It started with a scratchy throat and then no voice and tightness in my chest. I went to my family doctor and she prescribed a z-pack and an inhaler. By the 5th day, I thought I was getting better and then on the 6th day, my chest started really feeling tight and I started to develop a very dry cough. Continued using inhaler, did not feel better, actually worse. Went back to the doctor and she diagnosed me with bronchitis by my symptoms and my check up. I went for a chest x-ray and I was told I did not have anything acute. My doctor prescribed me a steroid and another antibiotic (Cefdinir300mg) 7 days ago. I am still feeling terrible and I am still coughing like crazy with a dry cough and about 2 days ago my throat and roof of my mouth started feeling tender and it hurt to eat and drink. I looked at the roof of my mouth and it is red and it looks a little blistery. Not sure what I am dealing with. I am getting concerned as I do not see any real improvement. HELP!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It seems you have respiratory tract infection being treated with antibiotic to which bacteria is resistance. In such condition you need to get CBC, sputum culture and sensitivity test done. This would help to find type of organism infecting, the antibiotics suitable for the infection and also presence of associated factors like allergy, inflammation and severity of infection.

After this you would be advised for effective antibiotic and it's needful dose, duration of treatment to control infection and antiallergic medicines, anti-inflammatory drugs, vitamins, histamine blockers, bronchodilators and cough syrup to be given according to your health status. Please consult a chest specialist.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
