Hi I am 5days post op and my stomach is still extended and feels full. I can t get regular clothes on. My gas passing is painful. I m eating prunes and taking 8oz of prune juice each day and have had soft stools. The gas gets worse then somewhat relieves itself by bedtime. Normal? Something I should do or eat? Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history of postoperative day 5, lots of gases in abdomen, painful passage of gases, unable to wear clothes and relief by evening.
The most probable causes are:
Disturbed intestinal flora.
May be intestinal motility disorder due to electrolyte imbalance.
Aerophagia due to stress and anxiety.
I would advise you the following:
X-ray of abdomen in standing position.
Ultrasound to see for any collection.
Blood tests for infection and electrolytes.
Stool tests.
These will give the reasons and plan of actions.
