How To Treat Pain In The Side Of Upper Leg Below Knee?

What does it mean if you have pain on the side of your upper leg right below the knee but on the side of the leg. I think it s the Head of fibula. http://www.tooloop.com/human-leg-anatomy-diagram/ Or atleast I know it s around that area I ve had it for months and I ve been to doctors they say it ll probably just go away so I ve tried to wait it out for months but nothing changes. The pain comes and goes I work out play basketball run and box a lot.
