How To Treat Osteoporosis Of Hips And Spine While Suffering From Hyperparathyroidism?
I was just diagnosed with osteoporosis of my hips and the middle of my spine.I have had hyperparathyroidism for 9 years. My doctor told me several years ago to stop taking calcium and only take 400 mg of vitamin D. Will the drugs for osteoporosis really work for me with the hyperparathyroid problem and if yes, which one? Thank you.
Hello and welcome to HCM, Osteoporosis is expected with hyperparathyroidism. Hyperpapathyroidism leads to loss of calcium from bones and thus osteoporosis. The treatment of hyperpapathyroidism can help to prevent loss of calcium from bones. Calcium supplements should not be taken since hyperparathyroidism causes high calcium levels in blood, thus, intake of calcium can further increase calcium levels. Vitamin D supplements can be taken. However, the definitive treatment is treatment of hyperparathyroidism.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
