How To Treat Diarrhea With Blood And Mucus In It?

Hi my daughter is 2 and a half months old and suffering from diarrhoea with blood and mucous in it. ..she was given syrup Bactrium 2.5ml twice by the paediatrician along with ORS and lactoacillus....took for 4 days but diarrhoea did not improve fully...she has no fever and is feeding ok....yesterday she passed one motion with mucous mixed with blood...we went to the paediatrician and he prescribed syp Normet 2.5 ml bd...shall I give it or continue bactrim for few more days

Hello.
I have gone through your question and understand your concern. In a child aged over 1 year suffering with bloody diarrhea, most common cause can be intestinal infection or bowel pathology. In my view you can start up empirical therapy of Normet as advised by your doctor. Then wait for at least 3 days to see the results of antibiotic started and make sure your child is well hydrated during the treatment.
But, an additional suggestion from me is to go for a stool culture including examination for ova, cysts and parasites. Hope your concern is answered. Thank you.
