How To Treat Dark Discoloration On Thumb Caused After Injury?

I slammed the entire tip above knuckle of my thumb in a car door about 4 weeks ago, My thumb is back to normal movement wise however the nail is completely blue black the skin to the sides are blue black and with each shower it has come away from the healthy skin the base of my nail there is now a 2mm gap revealing the base of my blue black nail I can t see or tell if a new nail is growing and when I ve shone a light behidw my thumb is just shows a solid black with a little it of red in the centre, there seems to be no infection it s not smelly I m just concerned I thought the nail would of came away by now, my nails generally grow quite fast (costs me a fortune with my beautician lol) any advice what I should do next ? There s no pain and I have feeling on and around my thumb pad.

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that due to a sudden and vigorous traumatic injury there has been soft tissue injury and also perforation of small blood vessels..
Blue and black discolouration is due to accumulation of blood into the soft tissues from the perforated blood vessels and it leads to bruising and hematoma formation..
Solid black area with a little of red in between seems to be a Hematoma that is a harmless tumour formed by the spilled blood..
Do not worry about it as the pain has subsided and also you have proper movement of the joint..
Bruising and hematoma especially if it is so severe like you have takes about a month to resolve and can even take longer to about 2 to 3 months to resolve..
Also if the nail is completely lost it will not grow back in a week or so but can take about a month or more to grow back completely..
Do not worry as everything will turn back to normal.
You can however start applying Heparin gel for faster fading of the bruise and do alternate warm and cool compresses over the bruising..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
