How To Treat Cough In A 5 Years Old Child?

Hi,

My 5 year old daughter is suffering from sever cough since last two days. Since she is 8 months old, she is using levolin and relent syrup as and when required. Now she is ashtmatic and her cough is not reducing with Levolin & relent. Doctor suggested to use duolin twice daily & budecort daily one for 6 months. Will there be any side effects with the above? can we budecort for so long?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. Yes, the use of Budecort, an inhaled steroid, is all right if given even up to a few years, so don't worry. Remember to make her gargle her mouth and brush her teeth and gums after every use of Budecort. Stop using Relent. Continue Levolin also as an inhaler - you can use up to 7 to 8 times in 24 hours to stop the cough.

Duolin nebulisation can be used initially, but will have no benefit once her symptoms are better. Switch over to Levolin inhaler after a few days of duolin.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Taher Kagalwala
