How To Treat Cold, Cough And Fever?

Hi. My daughter is 4 years old. She is suffering from high fever, cough, cold and congestion since last five days. My doc has prescribed maftal p sos whenever she has high fever say more than 101/crocin if has fever less rhan 101, maxtra syrup for cold, bricarex syrup for congestion, corex syrup for cough. After three days, if sge doesnt recover, advent syrup is to be given also. Have given the same medicines except advent syrup. She is improving. In place of 3-4 times a day , now she is getting fever once a day. Bt her cough, cold , congestion is the same. Throughout the day, she is fine but she is very restless at night. Cant have a sound sleep. Keeps on coughing the whole night. Just wanted to be sure is the medication right? And shall i start advent syrup? Suggest me any change in tge medication, if required. Thanks. Regards Poonam Ahuja

Hi, thabks for posting your concern in the HCM.
At this age, respiratory tract infections are very common, mostly due to viral infections. They are usually self limiting and resolved by 10 days. Sometimes they are complicated with superimposed bacterial infection or bronchiolitis etc. It is not rational to diagnose bronchiolitis or pneumonia without auscultating the chest and seeing the Xray.
However, from the symptoms and the current regimen of treatment you mentioned, I feel the approach has been a bit aggressive.
Please stop the Bricarex syr and Corex syr. Continue the Maxtra syr.
It would be best if you can take the baby to the nearest hospital emergency or have a nebuliser machine at home, so that saline nebulisation can be given. Alongwith that, please use Nasoclear or any other saline nose drop 3 to 4 times daily.
As the temperature spike has reduced, you can wait for another couple of days before starting antibiotic therapy. However, auscultation of chest is very important by a local pediatrician.
If needed, nebulisation with Levolin and Budecort may be done after consulting pediatrician. That would relieve cough and spasm, if any.
Please also maintain good oral hydration.
Immediate hospitalisation will be needed if the child becomes lethargic, irritable, drowsy, unable to eat or drink.
For any further questions write back to me directly.
Regards
