How To Treat A Large Inguinal Hernia?

I had surgeon look at my inguinal hernia about 8 months ago and after he looked at it he said that as long as it receded when laying down, which it does, it will not be a problem. It is quite large and sometimes gets in the way of siting in a chair, walking, etc. How long can a person go with doing nothing before it becomes a problem?
