Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I had a bone desity test that shows osteoporosis of the spine. Doc recs fosmates + D & Calcium -- in the dose of weekly. I woory about side effects of fosomax & I have acid reflux and take the PPOs. Are there measures to reduce the dangers or side effects of the fosomax type drugs besides taking in the am with water & remaining upright for 1 hour and not eating or drinking before an hour goes by after taking drug. Thanks
Fosamax (Alendronate sodium) should be given with a full glass of water before breakfast because bisphosphonates are poorly absorbed.
It is recommended that patients remain upright for at least 30 min after taking the medication to avoid oesophagal irritation.
An alternative to oral Bisphosphonate is Zoledronic acid which is a potent bisphosphonate with a unique administration regimen (5 mg by slow IV infusion annually). Consult your doctor.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
