How To Lower ALT Levels Shown In Blood Test?

Hi. My husband has primary sclerosing cholangitis and his recent blood work revealed his ALT was 90. We understand this is abnormal. Is there something he can do to get the levels to come down? The dr. wants to repeat his blood work next month. Thank you.

Hello

Increased ALT indicates liver injury and it may be due to many reasons like hepatitis, alcohol intake, altered lipid profile, medicines, auto immune causes etc.
Increased SGPT in your husband's case may be due to primary sclerosing cholangitis.

He may need to take some medicines after proper evaluation.I suggest my patients to take tablet ursodeoxycholic acid 300 mg twice daily for three months. It helps in regeneration of liver cells.
Treatment of primary sclerosing cholangitis is treating complications and monitoring liver damage.
Liver transplant is the last option for primary sclerosing cholangitis.

Get well soon.
